The Southern Sights Experience – Invergordon to Inverness

Thursday 9, April, 2026

If you are arriving into the Port of Invergordon and want to see a meaningful part of the Highlands in a day, this is a route I know well and enjoy sharing. We travel south by executive luxury midi coach through a landscape shaped by deep time, hard history, and everyday Highland life, with guided commentary along the way rather than just a transfer from stop to stop.

This tour takes in Clava Cairns, Culloden Battlefield, the shores of Loch Ness, and free time in Inverness, the capital of the Highlands. It is designed for cruise guests who want to travel in comfort, hear the local story properly, and return to the ship with time in hand.

Why choose this Invergordon shore excursion
This is not a rushed bus trip with a list of names and no sense of place. I share the history, character and local knowledge that help each stop mean something, while keeping the day relaxed, well paced and suited to cruise timings.

You will travel in an executive luxury midi coach with comfortable seating and a clear meeting plan from the Port of Invergordon. Departure time is confirmed after booking and adjusted where needed around your ship’s docking schedule. We return at least one hour before departure, so guests can enjoy the day without worrying about the clock.

Tour highlights
Clava Cairns
A remarkable neolithic site just outside Inverness, where the standing stones and burial cairns give a real sense of how long people have lived and gathered in this landscape.

Culloden Battlefield
A place that still carries weight. This is not just a famous name from Scottish history. It is a site that asks people to pause and understand what happened there and what followed.

Loch Ness
We stop at the shores of Loch Ness to take in one of the best-known Highland locations for ourselves. Even a short stop here gives people a feel for the scale and atmosphere of the loch.

Inverness
You then have free time in Inverness to explore in your own way. Guests often choose to visit the castle area, cathedral, local shops, riverside walks, or a distillery depending on their interests and the time available.

Sample itinerary
1. Pick up from Invergordon
Collection from the Port of Invergordon. Final pick-up time is confirmed after booking, with earlier or later departures depending on ship docking time.

2. Scenic drive south with guided commentary
As we leave Invergordon, I share commentary on the area, the route, and the wider Highland landscape as it opens up ahead of us.

3. Clava Cairns – around 30 minutes
Time to walk the site and take in one of the Highlands’ most striking prehistoric locations.

4. Culloden Battlefield – around 1 hour
A chance to visit the battlefield and reflect on one of the most important and poignant events in Highland history.

5. Loch Ness stop – around 30 minutes
Time at the loch shore to enjoy the setting, take photographs, and simply experience the place for yourself.

6. Inverness free time – around 2 hours 30 minutes
Explore the city at your own pace. You may wish to visit a castle experience, cathedral, distillery, shops, cafés or simply walk the centre and riverside.
